Another Day in Paradise

Lots of rain can always cause problems, but lots of rain in the mountains where we live can be disastrous. Therefore, we watched tropical storm Lee grow up in the Gulf and head north. The forecast track showed the storm missing Georgia, but our weatherman predicted 6-10 inches of rain. That's a lot of rain for us!.

The rain started Monday morning and continued through the noon hour. It never  rained hard and we had no wind; a nice rain to watch from our covered screen porch. Shortly after noon, the local TV stations went to full time weather reporting. Several rain cells (not thunderstorms because no lightning) showed "significant wind shear" -a precursor to a tornado!

Oh! Oh! A tornado sighted 40 miles from us and heading our direction.  Oh! Oh! #2! Another tornado on the ground 30 miles from us. We grabbed the animals and head for the lower level. Ten minutes later we lose our power. It's 4pm, raining pretty hard, wind picking up, warning sirens blowing, and we get red alerts calls on our cell phones. So we wait with flashlights and bottled water. After 30 minutes the siren sounds an all clear, so we move back upstairs. Lydia fixed supper on the gas grill burner and we eat on the porch watching the rain and the birds at the feeder.

The power is still off and it's getting dark, so I start our portable generator. Ten minutes later Lydia gets a text message saying our friends are partying at John's house because he has power. What the heck? We grab a bottle of wine and head for the party. The POFF (power off) party continued until 930pm when the power came back on. Back home we watch the evening news and learn that a small tornado touched down about 5 miles south of us. I guess we dodged another storm.

  1. It's a good thing you can go to the 'man cave' to get protection from a Tornado. I can't fit into our basement! Too bad about no pictures, where the editor? ;)
