Some of This and Some of That

Cleanup after the storm started immediately. Officials are not sure if it was actually a tornado. Anyway, the storm knocked down about 25 power poles, so many people were without power. We had power back in 15 hours so kudos to the power company!! A few days after the storm a crew arrived to clean up the tree limbs that fell on my car and open our street. By the way, the only damage in our area was my car. The insurance company decided to not repair it, so we are a one car family for the first time ever. One car and a golf cart, that is!
I'm not into horse racing, but this year's Kentucky Derby was special. My wife volunteered me to be the bookie for a Run for the Roses fund raiser. The Bent Tree Foundation Inc. (Lydia is a board member) used this event to build funds for their scholarship program. They bought me a software program designed to handle the betting. We sold over 100 tickets (one free mint julep with each ticket) and collected over $800 in bets. Most of the ladies wore custom made hats. Everyone had a great time especially the people who bet on Animal Kingdom to win.
The following weekend was a another fundraiser. Each year the Bent Tree Lake and Wildlife Committee collects donated items and holds a huge yard sale. Bent Tree residents are encouraged to clean out their basements and garages. Outsiders are invited and plenty of bargains abound which helped the yard sale gross about $5500 this year. Lydia volunteered as a pricer and sales person. Jim helped with set up, parking, and take down. Months of work ended successfully after the 5 hour yard sale that was almost rained out.
We are looking forward to our annual Memorial Day camp out with our Georgia kids and families. Look for details of that adventure in the next blog installment.
