For one brief moment.....

Each year the Bent Tree Lake and Wildlife Committee holds a fish fry to thank the volunteers who help on the many projects the committee undertakes during the year. It’s really a potluck, but volunteers cook the catfish and hush puppies. During last year’s fish fry I lost my head for one brief moment and volunteered to cook the hush puppies with my buddy, Elden.

Of course, we waited 11 ½ months before we remembered that promise. Elden and I spent an evening with our wives doing a taste test on several recipes. A few weeks later, we spent 2 hours mixing enough hush puppy mix for 100+ people.

The cooking crew gathered before the fish fry to cook about 5 boxes of catfish while we did over 400 hush puppies. Needless to say, we did not go thirsty while we were cooking because each cook brought their favorite beverage.
After everyone finished eating we cleaned up, along with a little help from some of our local wildlife, and went home to recover from standing over a hot kettle for 4 hours.

At the end, Elden says to me, “Want to do it again next year?” In another brief moment, I said yes. (more onions and jalapenos next year.)
